Rooted agroecology networks - growing care through feminist agroecology

Input and discussion with Joanna Bourke Martignoni and Charlotte Voigt

Amid entwined crises of care, climate and inequality, feminist agroecological initiatives are reshaping food systems by growing rooted networks. Starting from the Supporting Women-led Initiatives in Farming and rural Territories (SWIFT) Horizon Europe project, we ask how such networks emerge, how they are maintained, and what they contribute to caring food futures.

The SWIFT research project is an attempt to co-create a rooted network that includes researchers, farmers and civil society who work together to transform food systems both through their daily practices and methods as well as by pushing for policy change and presenting new narratives about food and agriculture.

This session is an invitation to work the same way in the room. Rather than presenting conclusions, we want to open a conversation in which participants learn from one another, and to ask together what feminist research and networking can generate when knowledge for and about caring food systems is shared.

Since 2025, WIDE Switzerland has been organising a course series with six Modules: “Introduction to Food Systems from a Feminist Perspective”, where each session can also be attended seperately. This session corresponds with Module five: Generating and sharing knowledge and experiences.

Speakers

Dr. Joanna Bourke Martignoni
is a Senior Researcher at the Gender Centre, Geneva Graduate Institute. She works on participatory action-research on gender equality, the right to food, food care, and agrifood policy change.

DI. Charlotte Voigt
Is doctoral candidate at the Institute of Development Research, BOKU University, Vienna. Her research explores feminist discourses in the European agroecology movement.
